Conference Introduction

Based upon the foundational assumption that the only true teaching of mindfulness comes out of the regular and systematic practice of it, this 5-day training is steeped in mindfulness practice to give you participants the experience necessary to bring this into their lives and into their practice with clients. Early morning and evening practice sessions (before breakfast and after dinner) are a crucial component of the training itself and will include a variety of mindfulness practices including sitting meditation, mindful movement and yoga, mindful walking and more. Selected meals will be taken in silence and some evenings will include silence from the conclusion of evening practice until breakfast the next morning.

Conference Objectives

Through this intensive experiential and contemplative approach, participants will:

  1. Gain familiarity with the foundations, basic structure, practices, and intentions of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction as it is has been taught, practiced and researched worldwide for 30 years.
  2. Explore ways to enhance, augment and adapt MBSR practices and perspectives by drawing upon the unique education, training and experience of psychotherapists. This can include the use of techniques and practices drawn from other mindfulness and acceptance based psychotherapies like DBT and ACT; incorporation of aspects of MBCT and other therapies derived from MBSR, being widely practiced and researched for a variety of populations and settings; as well as contemporary psychoanalytic, intersubjective, relational, attachment oriented, existential/humanistic and somatic therapies informed by mindfulness practice.
  3. Gain direct, practical experience in facilitating key meditation practices and processes in mindfulness-based interventions through instruction and experience in guiding and de-briefing meditations in small groups and dyads. The emphasis in this aspect of the program will be on guiding these practices out of one’s own direct, lived experience in the moment, based on a foundation of ongoing practice.
  4. Begin to explore the pivotal importance of mindful inquiry and investigation for facilitating the learning and practice of mindfulness meditation by patients and students. We will first focus on mindful inquiry and investigation in formal meditation practice, as a natural expression of mindfulness; and then within the context of the therapeutic relationship, as a way for the therapist to “be,” or function as, the mindfulness of the therapeutic relational field.
  5. Consider how best to incorporate mindfulness practice in their current clinical practice settings; with the specific diagnostic groups and populations with which they work. Participants will draw on their experience as “students” and “teachers” of the mindfulness practices and other practices presented in the training, as well as additional guided reflection, mindful dialogue and group discussion.
  6. Leave the program with an appreciation and understanding (both intellectually and experientially) of their own qualifications, limitations, strengths and weaknesses in regards to integrating mindfulness into psychotherapy. (NOTE: This program on its own will not suffice to render participants qualified to teach MBSR. While there are guidelines for proper qualifications and a formal certification process offered through the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Center for Mindfulness, the ultimate determination is made by the individual teachers themselves based on awareness of the demands of teaching and their own readiness.)
